Music video genres

The three main genres of music videos are:

  • Narrative
  • Concept
  • performance

Narrative

A narrative music video includes a storyline that often runs alongside the lyrics in the song. These music videos are often very theatrical and often include a wide range of shot styles.
Example: 'I'm not the only one'- Sam Smith

Concept

There are two subgenres of concept music videos. These are symbolic and thematic.
In symbolic videos, a wide range of stylistic shots and montages serve to create symbolism to reveal the true meanbing behind the video. Editing and mise-en-scene are both very important aspects in these videos as they helpto create meaning.

Thematic videos always contain a running theme throughout. This theme is used to draw the viewers attention to the piece. This theme can be as simple as a colour or place.

Performance

A performance video focuses on the band or artist by which the song was recorded. They often set the band in a casual setting whilst the song is lip-synced throughout. Performance videos are often used to allow audiences to be able to grow a connection to the band or artist themselves.
Example: 'Teddy picker-' Arctic Monkeys
